Day trip planner
Miyajima day trip: transport, ferry, timing and crowd strategy
A practical first-timer plan for Miyajima that makes you check ferry and weather sources instead of relying on old route screenshots.
Basic route
| Step | What to do | Check before going |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Hiroshima city to Miyajimaguchi | Use JR or Hiroden depending on your starting point, pass and schedule. | Hiroden schedules, JR route app, Google Maps. |
| 2. Ferry to Miyajima | Choose JR Miyajima Ferry or Miyajima Matsudai Kisen from Miyajimaguchi. | Official ferry timetable, weather and crowd conditions. |
| 3. Island route | Shrine area, waterfront, shopping street, lunch or snacks. Add ropeway/Mt. Misen only if you have time and energy. | Opening hours, weather, footwear and return time. |
| 4. Return | Return before you are exhausted. Leave time for ferry, train/streetcar and dinner back in the city. | Last comfortable return route, not only the final possible route. |
Best for / avoid if
Good for
- First-time visitors with a full day.
- People who want shrine, sea views and local snacks.
- Travelers comfortable with transfers and walking.
Think twice if
- You only have a few hours in Hiroshima.
- Heavy rain, strong wind or ferry disruption is likely.
- You need a very low-step, no-transfer day.
Practical checklist
- Check JMA weather before island plans.
- Check ferry operator information before assuming departure times.
- Bring cash or backup payment even if many places accept cards.
- Do not schedule Peace Memorial Museum and full Miyajima too tightly in one short day.
- Save your hotel and Hiroshima Station route before phone battery gets low.
