HiroshimaHub resident guide
First week in Hiroshima checklist
A day-by-day setup checklist for foreign residents who have just arrived or moved into Hiroshima City.
Day-by-day checklist
| Day | Task | Why it matters | Japanese keywords |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Confirm exact address, mailbox name, building rules, garbage station and nearest ward. | You need the address format for forms, delivery, bank/mobile and ward office paperwork.
| Day 1-2 | Photograph your lease, utility meters, gas valve, mailbox and garbage notice. | This prevents confusion when calling utilities, landlord or management company. |
| Within 14 days | Submit moving-in notification at the ward office or branch office for your new address. | Hiroshima City lists the application period as within 14 days from move-in.
| Same trip | Ask about National Health Insurance and pension if you are not covered by employer insurance. | Many residents with permission to live in Japan for over three months need public health insurance coverage.
| After registration | Update mobile, bank, school/employer, utilities and delivery address. | Some providers need a registered address, resident record or Japanese phone number. |
| Week 1 | Check garbage calendar and first collection dates before putting anything out. | Wrong day, wrong category or wrong station can cause trouble with neighbors. |
| Week 1 | Save emergency contacts and find your nearest clinic, pharmacy and evacuation site. | Do this before you are sick or a weather warning arrives. |
Bring to the ward office
- Residence Card or Special Permanent Resident Certificate. If not issued yet, bring passport.
- Moving-out Certificate if you moved from another municipality in Japan.
- My Number Card if you already have one.
- Proxy letter if someone else submits for you.
- Employer insurance details if asking whether you need National Health Insurance.
Common mistakes
Waiting too long
Address registration and insurance-related steps have deadlines. Do the ward office early, even if phone/bank setup is unfinished.
Going to the wrong ward
Use the ward office or branch office for your new address, not simply the closest building on the map.
No paper trail
Keep copies/photos of forms, receipts, insurance papers, utility contracts and landlord messages.
Official checks
Use HiroshimaHub for plain-language planning, then confirm current rules, forms, offices and deadlines on official pages before submitting documents or making payments.
