Itsukushima Shrine publishes seasonal opening hours and admission. JR Miyajima Ferry and Matsudai Ferry publish timetables and operation status.

How to get there from Hiroshima Station

  1. Fast and simple: Take JR Sanyo Line from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi. The shrine official access page lists this at about 30 minutes.
  2. Cross to the ferry port: Walk from Miyajimaguchi Station to the ferry terminal.
  3. Ferry to Miyajima: Both JR and Matsudai connect Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima in about 10 minutes. JR’s English page also highlights views of the Great Torii from the sea on selected daytime services.
  4. Walk to the shrine: From Miyajima Pier, follow the waterfront and shopping street toward Itsukushima Shrine.

Hours and admission

Itsukushima Shrine is listed by the shrine as open year-round with seasonal hours: 6:30-18:00 from March 1 to October 14, 6:30-17:30 from October 15 to November 30, 6:30-17:00 in December, and a special New Year schedule. Adult shrine admission is listed at 300 yen; a combined shrine and Treasure Hall ticket is listed at 500 yen for adults.

Always re-check before travel because ceremonies, weather or maintenance can affect access.

Suggested route

First-time core

Miyajima Pier, Omotesando, Itsukushima Shrine, waterfront photos, coffee/snack, ferry back. Good for 4-5 hours.

Slow island day

Add Momijidani, Daisho-in or Mount Misen ropeway if weather and energy are good. Keep dinner back in Hiroshima city.

Rain route

Shrine corridors, shops and a shorter waterfront walk. Skip long hikes and check ferry operation before leaving the city.

Practical notes

  • Footwear: The shrine official page notes spaces between corridor floorboards; comfortable shoes are better than high heels.
  • Crowds: Go early on weekends, holidays and cruise-ship days. Leaving Hiroshima after lunch turns Miyajima into a short photo stop.
  • Tide: High tide makes the shrine and torii feel more floating; low tide may allow closer views of the gate area. Check tide and safety locally.
  • Luggage: Do not bring large luggage onto the island if you can store it at your hotel or station.
  • Food: Omotesando has snacks and restaurants, but many close earlier than city restaurants. Plan dinner after returning to Hiroshima if you want flexibility.

FAQ

Do I need to reserve the shrine?

No standard reservation is needed for ordinary shrine admission. Check official notices for ceremonies, maintenance or special access restrictions.

Which ferry should I take?

Both JR and Matsudai are standard options from Miyajimaguchi. Compare timetable, rail pass eligibility and the route you prefer on the official pages.

Is it good for children or seniors?

Yes, if you keep the route compact. Avoid very hot afternoons, heavy rain and overpacking the day with Mount Misen unless everyone has the energy.

What should I pair after Miyajima?

Okonomimura, Hondori or a quiet hotel-area dinner. Do not plan another major museum after a full island day.
